New Garden

This year Aaron and I decided to start a veggie garden. Our back yard has been in a state of disarray since we moved in really. So this year we decided that instead of doing a ton of grass seed, we would make a big patch into a garden. We have spent the past month preparing the yard. My friend Jill came over to help out (she is going to be using some of the garden space). We spent days tilling the yard and found many tree roots from various trees that are around my yard, but not in it. I had a lot of goat head stickers in my yard (which I have been trying to get rid of). The tiller helped a bunch! Otherwise we would have had to rake the whole yard. We got rid of almost all the stickers and threw them in the trash. (I hope they don't come back.) Then after we had the yard almost ready I got the green house starter set up. We started pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, and carrots. It only took a week for those to start popping out of their little peat moss homes. I was getting so excited and wanting to get my yard truly ready, then the rain and snow came. For weeks it was too cold to turn the dirt any more. I would just look out at my yard and wish for warm weather. Then last Saturday it was warm!

The kids were up really early on Saturday and so Aaron and I really didn't get a chance to sleep in. We got up and ready to go out and get dirty. Aaron started raking the dirt to get the tilled weeds out of the garden area. We scooped out the extra dirt so that we could use it later. We tilled in some steer poo to get some extra nutrients into the ground. We seem to have some good dirt for Tooele anyway. It's a dark brown and soft after being moved about a bit. We marked the corners of the garden with some wood stakes and string. Then we marked where we wanted the rows to be. I went and got some of the veggies that were ready to be put in the ground. We got the pumpkins, cucumbers, squash, and watermelon in the ground. I also planted corn and peas. We are firm believers in Miracle Grow, and have used it twice already.

So far I have only lost one plant. For my first garden I think it is pretty good so far! I still have the tomatoes, carrots, and lettuce still in the house so that they can get bigger and live. I am very excited to see my veggies grow. I am even more excited to eat them!

I am having a couple problems though. They are the little girls across the street. They are from a broken home. Their mom is the live in girlfriend with the guy across the street. They have been there for about 2 months now. They are rude little girls. They enjoy climbing things at my house that shouldn't be climbed and then just act like I am so mean when I tell them not to climb them. Yesterday I had to yell at them because they were running across the garden right where I had planted the corn. They looked at me like I was stupid for telling them to stay out of the marked area. (It is clearly marked with string that is easy to see.) I didn't work so hard to have the snot bucket kids across the street ruin everything. I would tell their mom, but she wouldn't care. I hate people like that.

I am still very excited about my garden, I just hope that the kids and bugs will stay out now!

Good luck with your garden.

I have a couple of suggestions if you can stand it (I hope so).

1. Make sure to Harden Off your indoor plants! Being inside the whole time then going to colder nights and wind will stress them more than they may be able to handle. Just take them outside for part of the day (if it is nice). Start with one hour the first day and double it each following day. We learned our lesson on this the hard way.

2. If you can stand to include the two "cherubs" from across the street, you could get them to help in the garden. Then MAYBE they would care and be more respectful. At least put them to work every time they come over and maybe they'll learn to stay away. ;)

I hope your garden is successful! We won't be planting for at least 2 more weeks, maybe more.

Ugh...some people's children! I wonder why some parents don't see the need to teach their kids respect. I hope they can learn to at least listen to you. And I hope your garden grows and grows! I wish I the patience for things like that. I admire you.

Good luck on the garden and the girls! Sounds like you're privileged to have lots of "learning opportunities" right now. ;)
